Brawl: Wood Elves vs. Uruk-Hai

Original Air Date: April 17, 2011

So I played a second game with Glenstorm recently...I played as the Uruks and he got to use most of my Elves. The armies were as follows:

The Defenders of Rivendell: 376 points

Elrond - 170 points
Wood Elf Captain with throwing daggers - 70 points
5 Wood Elf Warriors with Elven blades - 40 points
6 Wood Elf Warriors with Wood Elf spears and throwing daggers - 60 points
4 Wood Elf Warriors with Elf bows - 36 points

17 units, 4 bows, 2 heroes

The Fist of Isengard: 350 points

Uruk-Hai Captain with shield and heavy armor - 60 points
15 Uruk-Hai Warriors with shields - 72 points
10 Uruk-Hai Warriors with pikes - 54 points
1 Uruk-Hai Warrior with banner - 39 points

27 units, no bows, 1 hero

The scenario we will be playing is another brawl game, and the purpose of it is to try out Glenstorm's new Elrond figurine. He has a 25 point advantage, so the expensive nature of Elrond won't be too much of a hindrance to the game play.

As with every brawl game, we play until one player grants victory or until one side is broken and the appropriate dice roll is cast. In this case, after each turn we try to roll a 6, adding 1 to the required roll after each round of not rolling the correct number. With this in mind, here is the map:

The map is largely open, except for a few forests and a few hills. The Elves have lined up on one side, while the Uruks have lined up on the other.

After rolling a dice, the Uruks will begin the game with priority. Glenstorm told me at the beginning of the game that he didn't have a high respect for low-defense Elves, so we'll see how this game goes...

Turn 1: Head-Long Assault (Priority - Uruk-Hai)

Nothing happened this round, except that both armies moved towards each other. Here you can see my wedge on the hill, with the phalanx next to it.
Here is the smaller phalanx for this game, complete with skirmisher Uruk-Hai to protect the flanks from being attacked.

Turn 2: The Battle Begins (P - Elves)

During this turn, the Elves moved closer to the woods, seeking to make life cumbersome for the more durable force of the Uruk-Hai. there are a few archers at the top right of the screen. One successfully killed an Uruk-Hai during the Shoot phase of this round.
Here you can see the Elven advance. Those with spears have throwing weapons to support their comrades, which on occasion can be particularly lethal. Elrond is the unpainted metal figure, leading a company of primarily spearman against the Uruk-Hai. You can also see an Elf talking to him...I can only imagine what he's saying. Also, in lieu of having an actual Wood Elf Captain, the Elf in the center of the lower formation is the captain today.
Kill count: Elves 1, Uruk-Hai 0.

Turn 3: Into The Forest...And Around (P - Elves)

Both armies just keep moving towards each other...nothing interesting happened, but the heat is on as the phalanx prepares to surround the forest resistance.

Kill count: Elves 1, Uruks 0.

Turn 4: The Magic of Rivendell (P - Uruk-Hai)

Despite winning priority, the Wood Elf Captain called a heroic move (uncontested by my captain due to the presence of a spellcaster and only 2 Might points). Elrond then moved into position for a Nature's Wrath. Despite an attempt to block the terrible spell, here was the result...

As you can see, most everyone was affected and the Elves then proceeded to engage those they wished. Thankfully, the throwing weapons of the Elves didn't kill any Uruk-Hai.
As you can also see, most of the Uruks managed to get up after the blast, moving towards the flank of the Elves once more. Not on that list, unfortunately, was my Captain, who lay helpless against the assault of the Elves. My captain also took a wound from the Captain on his approach due to a nasty throwing dagger. I was relieved when my Fate point saved it and kept me fighting...albeit on the ground.
During the combats in the forest, an Uruk killed an Elf with Elven blade and two Elves ganged up against an Uruk, killing him. On the other side of the world, an Elf killed an Uruk with shield and an Uruk with two supporting pikes killed an Elf with spear.

Kill count: Elves 3, Uruks 2.

Turn 5: The Magic Continues (P - Elves)

Here we go again. Elrond paid a few Might points to successfully cast this one and knocked a bunch of units to the ground. One of the Elves with spears killed an Uruk with a throwing dagger.
As you can also see, my Uruks are trying to get around the flank to the archers. An archer killed one of the pikes in the Shoot phase, though, but besides that, the rest of the attacks managed to work pretty well. During the Fight phase, one Uruk was killed by two Elves with spears, while the Uruks killed 2 Elves (one of the Uruks was the banner!), and the Uruk Captain managed to wound the Wood Elf captain once...which was saved by a Fate point.
Kill count: Elves 6, Uruk-Hai 4

Turn 6: All Is Chaos (P - Uruk-Hai)

So here we are with the Uruks seizing priority from the Elves. The Elves killed the banner bearer (picked up by an Uruk with shield) and a pikeman during the shoot phase.
Here you get a cameo shot of Glenstorm getting a model's eye view of the spearman who threw a dagger straight into the head of the banner-bearer. In these fights, the Wood Elf Captain won but didn't wound his opponent, while the Uruk Captain cut down his foe.
In these fights, the Uruks beat Elrond, but failed to wound. The Uruks lost the other fights, but none were killed.
Kill count: Elves 8, Uruks 5

Turn 7: Neck-And-Neck (P - Uruk-Hai)

So...my camera ran out of space. Made me very unhappy, but here's how the end of the game took shape:

In the Shoot phase, a Wood Elf spearman killed the new banner-bearer, but this time the banner was picked up by yet another Uruk with shield. In the Fight phase, the Wood Elf Captain was killed by the Uruk Captain. The Uruks also managed to kill an Elven swordsman and an Elf archer.

The Elves responded by killing a pikeman and Elrond killed an Uruk with shield.

Kill count: Elves 11, Uruks 8.

Turn 8: The End Approaches (P - Elves)

In this round, an Elven archer killed an Uruk pikeman while four uruks ganged up on an Elven spearman and killed him. This brought the kill count to...

Kill count: Elves 12, Uruks 9. It was here that we called the game, since the Elves were broken and we both needed to get home. Though the Elves probably would have lost the game, they were only 2 kills away from breaking me.

Assessment by Glenstorm:

Did Elrond kill anyone?  I can't remember him killing anyone.  At all.  170 points to slow down the enemy in epic proportions (definitely wins cool points), but that's not enough to say he did his work well.  Sure, he never took a hit (8 defense, and 3 fate points which he could re-roll makes him a tank like no other), but still, he didn't contribute very well to the team.  The elven archers did tolerably well, but they only started killing a good number of Uruk-Hai right at the end.  The throwing daggers did not work (I'm beginning to see a pattern), and he controlled the tone of the game from the beginning. Good game, Tiberius.

Assessment by Tiberius:

What a close game. The woods and the Nature's Wrath slowed down my units quite a bit. That spell, I'll tell you, is devastating if you don't have a good Will store to stop it. As for the Uruks, I was disappointed that I couldn't really use the Phalanx effectively, seeing as my units kept getting knocked down and I couldn't support them while they were on the ground. Still, it worked out in the end.
